Maybe they are angry that they are dying. Death is difficult to accept. I might not be so happy if I knew I were dying. But maybe some of the pain is so awful it makes them violent. who knows. I hope I don't have to find out.

There are many powerful drugs used to prolong life. Many of them have many nasty side effects. We found out after my grandfather died that the heart medication that he was on had a side effect that could change a persons personality (it made him argumentative, disagreeable, and mean). The combination of drugs can also effect personalities....

When a normally nice, well-mannered, gentle person has a change in personality during a serious illness don't take it personally. More likely than not it is a drug reaction or a combination of drugs and fear. Be proactive and discuss the situation with the person's nurse or Doctor ASAP.

Of course, it may depend on their illness and what it is physically affecting. They may have pain they are not expressing.
They may have not come to grips with the fact of their mortality. There are probably many thoughts running through their heads. Another possibility is that they are afraid of leaving their loved ones, and fear what the afterlife may be. They may even subconsciously know that it is going to hurt those left behind, and by distancing themselves, they believe that it will hurt them less.
In any case, it will be difficult but they need your support and understanding. If they believe in the afterlife, remind them that it is not an ending, but a new beginning in a better place.

Because they're still human, and all humans have the ability to get angry - and if you're dying, chances are that you're angry about it. Plus, it's possible they might not be able to do things for themselves, which in itself is frustrating, and undignifying. The knowledge they you're in pain, and that it's not going to get any better, just worse, is enough to make anyone nasty.

They're angry that this has happened to them. Out of all the people in the world, why did this have to happen to them. They never asked to get sick.
