Meditation is good for not only relieving one form stress but also for concentrating energy towards positive aspects of life.
Focus during meditation is always in inner side of yourself. Focus on breath, and the best way of doing it is counting or chanting some numbers or Om, this automatically brings your focus on breath. Once you have this focus, it helps in getting you towards better concentration. And you have a better control over your feelings, then you wouldn't feel stressed.

Focus on one thing only, usually on your breath where it enters the nose. Everyone gets distracted in meditation, but every time you realize your distracted just bring your thoughts back to the breath. Tell yourself that for the next 15 minutes you will just think of nothing and for the next 15 minutes there are no problems in your life, nothing you have to get done, and nowhere you have to be.

Primitive meditation is making a noise to stop thoughts. Advanced meditation must focus on very simple questions that can be answered in a yes or no form. You will later discover you can get in tune with your ancestors and find guidance as they work for god. Trust me.

Focus on your breathing. Shut your eyes, lay down in a quiet comfortable room. Then listen to your own breathing. Do some slow deep breathing at first, this relaxes you. Then, start with your head, feel if there is tension there and consciously relax that area and then move to your neck and so on.
You can also listen to very calming music and focus on that, or a CD of bird sounds, etc.

Meditation is a way of learning how to stop mental content that causes stress. Thoughts arise, and you should let them drop away without continuing to think about the thought.

i just learned about this awesome biofeedback program that you can use on your own PC.it will help you learn to relax!!! i used the program at a class last night and it is SO awesome. im definately going to get the system. i have high anxiety and struggle to relax and meditate too. the website is www.wilddevine.com

dont overdo it
just enjoy it, dont overanalyze. you can think about things for a while to ge it out, sometimes you need to think. then let them drift by, and dont focus on anything. or use a mantra, a nice word that you say to yourself.
