I have had this very conversation before and we have thought about the bodies need for a little more oxygen, the air pressure changing when someone yawns forcing another person to yawn to compensate for the change think about when you are in a car driving over a mountain your ears start to hurt and you yawn and that makes it better I DONT KNOW

Compounding the mystery is the odd way in which the contagious power of yawning is largely unconscious. We can see someone yawn, yearn to replicate the action ourselves, and do it, all without thinking about it. Other times we’re aware it is happening, though it still floats somewhere beneath the realm of reason and of purposeful actions.

we yawn to take in extra oxygen. when oxygen is low people yawn therefore if you see someone yawn you instinctively yawn to take whatever oxygen is left. Its a guess

Its an instinct, like how you ALWAYS close your eyes when you sneeze... it's something you can't stop without thinking of it
