Hmm...invite him to go skating or to a movie or something. And just flirt a little. Then, see where it goes. I'm no expert on this, terrible with the ladies, but that's what i'd do in your shoes.

Write him a letter. Call him on the phone. Email him. Meet up on a weekend. There are multiple ways to talk with him. I think you just need to be honest and let him know how you feel, but keep in mind that you should prepare yourself ahead of time mentally just in case he does not feel the same way. Also, if you are really good friends then when you take that step and cross the line beyond friendship then you need to understand that you are entering the point of no return. Things happen. Things change. It does not have to be for the worse. It's whatever you both make it.

Sounds like you already solved your problem. You found a way to tell him...so next time you see him, tell him, and if it turns out he doesn't like you back, you go to different schools so you won't have to worry about seeing him every day.

Letters seem to work pretty well. That way you can go over it before you give it to him.
Or, straight up ask him if he wants to get dinner and spill it over dinner.

next time you see him (if you're with your friends maybe) you can take him aside and tell him how you feel. (IF YOU REALLY WANT TO)
But if I were you, I'd wait for him to go to me.

Call his school office and pretend to be a nurse.
Leave your first name, your phone number, and a fictitious doctor's office name.
Tell the school office to please get your information to him in his class and for him to call at his earliest convenience.
When he calls...ask him if he wants to play doctor.
: )
