Warm water, not so hot as to be uncomfortable but quite warm.
The heat of the water helps break down the oils that are on your face holding dirt. The soap suspends this dirt while it is washed away leaving your face clean.
Just like warm water helps melt butter off a kitchen knife, warm water helps remove the oils from your face.
