The only way to keep hair healthy is to trim it every few months (I trim mine every two or so) ... you don't have to trim a lot. I know you're trying to let it grow out, but if you trim it about 1/4 of an inch, which is nothing, you will keep it healthy and you won't even tell the difference after it's "cut."

Also, try putting organic, vigin, unrefined coconut oil on your hair (just a tiny bit) like a pomade, and it will keep your hair shiny, silky & help replenish it. You can find it at any high end grocery store like Whole Foods for about 9.00 for a jar. It's in the cooking oil section, but I use it as a moisturizer on my body & hair, instead of lotion or pomade.

You have to trim it at least occasionally, but don't let the hair dresser cut too much off! If you don't trim it at all, you won't get as much growth because once a split end is present, it travels up the hair shaft. Also the hair that you do have won't be as healthy or look as good. Hair grows about a half inch every month, and slightly more in the summer. Trim it about every 3 months or so to get rid of damage but keep the length.

DO NOT color treat or perm your hair if you want to grow it out. It damages your hair. Also, get your hair TRIMMED so that it will grow FASTER. And, brush your hair 100 PLUS strokes a day....... it helps in growth as well.

A good place to go for advice actually, is a beauty school. They will give you ideas on how to keep your hair healthy & what products work best at a decent price, as they know cause they are students!! They also TEND to take more time talking with you.

not a good idea. Get your hair trimmed at least every 8 weeks. It can be a quarter of an inch, and this keeps hair as healthy as possible.

A quarter of an inch shouldn't really matter considering that healthy hair will grow at a rate of 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch per month. That means, if you keep your hair as healthy as possible, you can have it grow an inch and a half every two months. that's pretty good.

I'm a hair freak/junkie, so i know what it takes to maintain healthy hair, here are some cardinal rules to follow:

1) protein treatments once/twice a month. Use an ample amounth and leave it in overnight. Rinse out the next morning with shampoo then condition.
recommendation: nexxus emergencee, joico k-pac, redken anti-snap
2) NO heat. no irons, blowdryer, curlers, etc... nothing. nada. no exception.
3) minimalize the hair products you use, and look for ones with as few/natural ingredients as possible. avoid alcohol-based products, which dry hair out.
4) even if you don't use products, use a clarifying shampoo once every week or two.
recommendation: neutrogena clarifying shampoo, paul mitchell shampoo two
5) don't tie your hair back too long or too often. This induces hair breakage.
6) don't comb or brush your hair excessively; keep this to a bare minumim as this causes hair breakage as well. and remember, hair is its most fragile when wet.
7) no hair coloring, bleaching, dying, highlighting.
8) wash your hair once every two or three days. that means at most, twice or three times per week.
9) condition after every wash
10) perchance once a month use a good deep conditioner and leave it in for 10/20 minutes.
11) trim every 6-8 weeks.

Good luck, and happy long hair.

you will have to trim your ends at least every 6 weeks (not more than half inch) and give your hair a treatment like yoghurt as a leave in conditioner for as long as possible then rinse on a regular basis if your hair not oily already, once in a while.

Yes, conditioner is the key. ALL shampoos strip hair, that is their job. However, the key is to replenish it with good conditioner. I alternate shampoos and conditioners. Sometimes I use a packet of "Hask Placenta" which you can get at Wal-Mart. It adds protein. I also quite often use a vinegar rinse, especially when shampoo builds up--yuck. This consists of 1 oz apple cider vinegar and 4 oz water in a cleansing bottle. This had been very effective for me. I also take multivitamins.

Listen to xlilangel's advice. You do nee to get your hair trimmed regualrly. and once you find a stylist that cuts your hair right and dosen't take off too much, stick with them. Once a person knows how to cut your hair you will never get the same cut from someone else.

1: Don't over wash it ! Once every 2 or 3 days is fine and use lots of conditioner .
2: Don't wash it with super hot water luke warm is fine.

3: if it is tangled don't brush it hard just gently work out the tangles!

Good luck all those thing work for me!
