I am having the same trouble, first deciding minidv over dvd and then when I did, bought the elura 100. It went back after 2 weeks of use due to the motor/ tape mechanism noise that was bugging the audio. See te reviews on elura. So now elura100 is out. I am edging towards the panasonic as this is a 3 ccd, and 3 MP still. And I am not looking forward t use sonys touchscreen controls. Its almost $100 more than hc48, but I guess if you are planning to use it for at least 5 years, it doesn't hurt so much....besides fits into your $500 budget.

I have a canon Elura100 and love it. I have had great luck with all the canon camcorders I have used and mixed results with other brands. I haven't used the other models so I can't make a fair comparison, but the elura has great image quality and manual controls. I don't like the location of the USB and Firewire ports and some of the buttons, but that is a minor problem.

there is no longer a lot distinction between them. yet i imagine for this variety you ought to purchase a effective a series canon which incorporates A590is or so. in this variety , Panasonic does no longer provide a lot and if it does , the lens isn't Leica it truly is between the perfect lenses accessible. Sony branded cameras in this variety , gained't use Zeiss lense both. Sony has 2 different issues. first they has a particular battery and 2d they have particular memory card style which will reduce you. so I advise one among Canon's a series those are very tremendous cameras, they makes use of AA batteries that you could acquire each and every the position and in case you employ NiMH rechargeable they are going to very last for days. those cameras makes use of SD memory playing cards so that you could use those memory playing cards for record move on very virtually each and every digital gadget and also you'll locate those memory card each and every the position for extremely low expenditures in case you opt for more beneficial room to take more beneficial images. I advise a type that has "is" on the type. which means it has image stabilizer which will be functional to take solid images in low uncomplicated. operating example A590is is a very smart decision. and do not settle on on mega pixel. each and every element above 4Mpixel is tremendous or perhaps the more beneficial ones ( more beneficial than 8) will make the images worse.

I haven't seen reviews for the HC48 or the GS320 but camcorders that are close to those are the HC46 and the GS300.
From the reviews, it looks like the Panasonic is the best, then the Canon, and the Sony is getting quite bad reviews.
