She should always use a sharp knife. Dull knives cause more injuries than sharp knives.

I am extremely sorry to hear about your friend. I know this is hard. Take it from me, I've have been hurting myself for 7 long years. What made it worse for me was when my friends told my parents and my school counselor. I know they were worried, but it really did more harm then good. Make her aware that you know of her injury, don't argue with her. This is the hard part- don't tell her parents. The very first reaction a parent has when they find out that their child is Self Harming is Anger. They immediately ask to see the wounds and threaten the child by saying things like '' if you don't stop cutting, we're sending you to a mental hospital, or counseling''. This will only agrivate your friend, and she'll want to do it more to make you or her parents angry. Again, let her know that you are aware of her wounds and what she has been doing. Tell her that you are here for here and when she is ready to make her family aware of her S.I, that you will be there with her. Tell her you will be ther for her when she want's to quit. Don't rush things; take it slow. And remember this- You can't make someone quit if they don't want too. Good Luck.

I have a friend who does/did the same thing. It all boils down to your friend needs some help. Try to get her to talk to you -- really talk. Try to find out what is bothering her. There is usually a 'root' cause to it. Usually, by cutting, it dulls the emotional pain. It gives them something else to focus on other than the real problem. Not knowing the age of your friend, there are several places you and your friend could go to get help. Parents, teachers, school counselors, EAP programs at work, etc. If your friend is afraid to go and talk to someone, go with her if you feel comfortable to do it. This can lead to very serious problems and a very serious injury. Go to whomever you can to get her the help she desperatly needs. You are obviously a good friend - you are trying to help her. Good Luck!!

cutting is nearly always a cry for help,no matter what they say, there are disorders that involve self mutiliation, but 99% it is attention seeking,or to look cool,

once you get into it it's different, the pain will give you adrenaline, you can become hooked on cutting, its really stupid,if she likes pain, tell her to get a tattoo
