If you are saying your daughter didn't live with you or your wife for at least half of the year last year, but did live with another relative (the child's aunt? her grandmother?) for over half the year, then that relative can probably claim her as a dependent.

If she didn't live with anyone for over half of the year, or if the person she lived with is a more distant relative than her aunt, sibling, or grandmother, then you can probably claim her if you provided over half of her support. If you didn't provide over half of her support, then no you can't.

I am assuming your daughter is a child. If she's over 18 or is self-supporting, then the answer would be different, but you would probably still not be able to claim her.

If you have provided more than 50 percent of her support in the year 2006, you can claim her.
