I learned this on the Bravo show "Top Chef" the contestants were often asked to prepare either a sweet or savory dish. Sweet is like a desert (it's sweet) and savory is a dish that is not sweet but seasoned with salt and possibly spices (basically breakfast , lunch and dinner) that is not sweet.

It's the opposite of "sweet". Like having lots of garlic, non-sweet herbs and spices. A lot of people say they're either a sweet or a savory person. I don't care for sugar, so I'm a savory person.
