Try this site

stumbleupon.com

It's a toolbar you download onto your computer, you then fill out a profile of your interests like fashion, romance, games, sports, music, movies, philosophy, computers, cooking, history, travel, etc on your homepage. When you click the "Stumble" button on the tool bar it takes you to random websites on the Internet that fits your profile.

it's incredibly addictive

The standard best of breed programs include:

- Firefox
- Thunderbird
- OpenOffice.org

Beyond that, there are simply so many programs that your question is as difficult to answer as "what are some good programs" would be -- there are literally thousands of candidates.

You should perhaps be more specific.

If you want to work on photos, the best free program is called GIMP. You can do just about anything you could do in Photoshop. Click on the following web site: http://www.gimp.org/
