There is nothing available this early. The final payroll periods would not even be posted by the state yet. That is why unemployment pay is based on pay for the prior to the last quarter. Even after that it would probably only be available to employers who need to do corrections.

You will need the W2's if you mail in your tax forms or have a paid preparer do it. If you do it online and you know the exact amounts including withholding you can do without them. The only problem would be if there was an audit at a later date.

W-2s are not reported to the post office at all, and to cities only as applies to local city tax withheld. You may be thinking of the IRS being able to provide the information to you if you file a complaint against an employer that has not or will not give you a W-2. I don't know how willing, or how quickly, they will be to help you if you are just too lazy to contact the employers yourself.

I think that it is your responsibility to get W-2 forms from every employer you worked for in 2006. If they do not send one to you, you can advise the IRS when you submit your return, BUT you have to make an estimate of all the numbers in that W-2.

Making a wrong estimate will mean that you have to file an amended Form 1040X the next year to pay or get refund whichever applies.

I suggest you contact all of your employers by phone, reminding them them that it is the law they have to provide you with a W-2.
You can also tell the IRS, who will send them an official letter telling them to do this.

You heard wrong. Where would the city, or the post office, get that information. You'll need to get your W-2's from all your employers and file them all together. If you file without some, you'll hear from the IRS that you didn't do a complete filing.

ahh..im going through this right now! my last employer (out of many) has not sent me my w2. and they keep giving me the run around and i dont know how many times ive contacted them..grr. but i called the irs and they told me the only thing they can do is send a letter to the businees and be prepared w/ the bussiness address before you call they get rude. but nothing else can be done..i wish you could go to your post office and find out this info..would be so much easier. but if you never get your w2 from them you will have to do it off of your last pay stub and then fill out yet another form of the 4825. good luck :)
