For me, this started about a month ago. I would lay down for a short rest or nap in the afternoon and end up in deep, nearly unwakable sleep for 4-5 hours. All that has moderated now though and if I do snooze off in the afternoons it's only for an hour or so -- and it's never as often as it was a month ago.

When this occured where you feeling low self esteem, feeling sad all the time crying a lot......

People have different feelings when depressed like not wanting to get out of bed, dont want to do the normal daily routine i.e. work ,wash, eat, they sometimes start drinkg heavily which is worse as alcohol is a depressant.. They dont want to go out or socialise, take to sleeping at unusual times or dont get up at all..

As you say your sleeping pattern has sorted its self maybe you where just out of synch where you going to bed later than usual, doing extra work, stressed out by anything? These could all have been factors as to why you where sleeping so long, sometimes the body just needs to recharge and this is what happens, you say you usually take a nap maybe your body just needed extra sleep where you more tired at this time than you are usually?

If you begin to feel any of the other things I said earlier then visit the doc and talk to him, he will know whats best....

Hope this helps you take care

It depends. Usually the sleep problems associated with Depression are more like an inability to sleep through the night, being tired all day, wanting to do nothing but sleep yet finding it unrestful.
Also, do you feel down? Are you tired all the time or just sleep really soundly when you nap? Do you have a bad outlook on life? Are you mostly irritable and joyless? Those are some signs of Depression.

If that is your only symptom, no it is not depression. It sounds as if you are not getting enough restful sleep per night. You should try to get 8-9 hours per night. Make sure your room is dark, cool and condusive to long-term sleep.

Short naps are actually good for you, no more than 20-30 minutes for a power nap around noon time. But, when you sleep for hours, that, I think, shows you are lacking sleep.

Also, do you snore? You could have Sleep Apenea which can rob you of a good nights sleep. You will need to see a sleep specialist.

Changes in sleep patterns is a symptom of depression. But, it can indicate plenty of other illnesses, or not be anything, too. Usually, depression is also associated with changes in appetite, feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest in friends, sex, etc.
If you suspect you are suffering from depression, get to a doctor right away. While it is very treatable, most people needlessly suffer.

I agree with MadforMAC about sleep apnea, especially if you snore, and feel groggy during the day. Also, if you are overweight, you are at a greater risk.

While it could be depression, it can also be obstructive sleep apnea that can make you feel depressed because of interrupted sleep patterns.
