Three men checked into a hotel for which they paid $30. The next day, the manager glanced at the records and realized the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the men. On the way, the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the men $1. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This, plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

if they started out with 30 and they payed 5 too much...25 divided to the three guys would be $8 to one guy, $8 to one guy, and $9 to the last. the bellhop took 2 dollars and gave them $3 so 1 dollar to each is...$9 for one guy, $9 for another, and $10 for the last guy. for a total of $30.

It is in your pocket - call the police - thief thief!! ha ha ha
You are counting the 2 dollars the bellhop took twice. When you say 9 x 3 is 27 that accounts for the 25 the manager has and the 2 that the bellhop has. Then you add the 2 from the bellhop again - stop it, it ain't nice. Anyway hope this shows you how. And never mind all those folks who say this question was just answered 20 times.

Nothing happened. The hotel collected $25, the three men were each given $1 back, and the bellhop kept the other $2. The total now comes to $30.

the order of operations is mixed up :) it should be they had 25 dollars plus 2 he kept plus the 3 he gave them. which equals 30. since they did it like the total was 30 dollars and the paid 27 which would account for the 3 dollars and then you should subtract the other 2 that the bellhop kept which would equal 25

Nothing happened.
They paid $30 - $5= 25+2 ( bell hop had ) =$27
$3 x $9=$27
$27 = $27

Simple. You SUBTRACT 2 from 27 and get 25...the discount price of the room. What that final equation was doing was stating how much money went to the hotel, not the total amount of money. It's pretty much 30-5, or 30-3-2.

I'm terrible with math but a friend of mine told me this one and of course had to explain it to me. :( Doh!
I know the mathematical rule Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally figures in somewhere....
$1 X 3, + 2 stolen dollars = $5 rebate + $25 already paid = $30
Yea, I did it!
