Since Labs are the most popular breed in this country, it should be easy to buy from from newspaper ads. If you want to ensure yours is healthy and without genetic disorders to come, I'd suggest you attend a dog show and buy a catalogue with breeders listed. They cost only a few dollars. Do research on Labs to find out what diseases and disorders are common among them, and ask the breeder about those in their kennels, e.g., some breeds tend to have hip dysplasia, which can be tested for, early as a pup. Ask to see the parents of the litter. Not all breeds bought from kennels are expensive. For instance. a pup that is called show quality would cost much more than one who is not show quality.
Hope you find the one you want.

It seems like between 25 and 30% of all the dogs in our local shelter that I volunteer and foster for are labs and lab mixes. If you want a nice dog to hang out with, play ball with, go on walks and hikes, there is no better dog than a shelter dog.

Try looking in your local newspapers and even your local shelter. My local shelter had a litter of 9 purebred lab puppies a few weeks ago, but they have all been adopted.
