Roast chicken takes 18-20 min. per lb. in a 350 degree oven. Start the chicken in a preheated oven, after you have taken it out of the refrigerator for about 30-45 minutes to take the chill off. You don't say how you want to cook it, so I assume you mean roasting. If you want recipe suggestions I can give those also, but all you ask is the time, so a 6 lb. bird should take approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. Test for doneness by moving the leg of the chicken up and down. If it moves easily, the chicken is done. You can also pierce the skin to see if the juices run "clear; (no pink,) or an instant-read thermometer to make sure it is 160 degrees.
Good luck, and 'bon appetite'

Until the juices run clear...no red blood. Piercing the thigh is usually the best indicator of doneness. If your chicken is cut up, you may want to leave the thighs in a bout 3-4 minutes longer than the breasts. Is this a chicken or a capon? Some older/bigger birds are tougher and may seen undone..they often need long slow moist cooking instead of hot and fast. Good Luck

It depends on how you are cooking it. Buy a meat thermometer. It comes in very handy when cooking whole chicken. With it you know for certain that the chicken is safe to eat.

I put my chicken in the oven at 350 degrees, at 20 minutes per pound. You will know it is done when you cut into it, and the juices are clear.

It needs about 2 hours if its not frozen. Roast it in the oven with lemon, garlic and herbs (whatever herbs you like best). you can also stuff the cavity with some orange and lemon slices. It comes out yummy that way
