It's really a personal preferance. I prefer to sleep with my hair down because it is usually placed under a lot of stress during the day by being tied up. If you frequently have your hair up, i recommend sleeping with it down because tying your hair up breaks and puts pressure on your hair and scalp and nighttimes can be used to reduce the damage done to your hair.

Well, tying it up won't help it grow. But it is important to protect the hair you have. But when going to sleep, you might consider doing something, when you are a very "wild" sleeper like me. I turn and turn during the night, so my hair suffers when it rubs over my pillow again and again. A rubber band, will cause damage to your hair and it will break. Now I wear a bandana at night. That way my hair stays in place, and isn't rubbing over my pillow, and I don't do damage to it with a rubber band. I tie it onto my head so that only the sides where I sleep on are protected. On top I cutted a whole, so it won't get to warm underneath it, and my hair keeps breathing. My boyfriend also suffers terrible hair loss, and he is using shampoo from the pharmacy, and some water with added oxygen. Avoid shampoo with perfume. Also a regular cut, just the tips, will help your hair grow. Because your roots will get more oxygen. Your hair is like a very tiny macaroni string, with a whole in the middle. When the tip get damaged, your roots suffer too. Don't be afraid to regularly cut it a little bit, it will stimulate the growth.

I was told that putting your hair in a LOOSE bun or ponyail on the TOP of your head while you sleep helps keep it from being flat in the morning. I stress LOOSE because you will get a dent in your hair if you pull your elastic too tight ( I make this mistake ALOT :)

I suggest that you leave your hair down when sleeping. It will allow for a better circulation in your body, and your hair gets this weird bump if left tied for a long period of time.
It is okay if you loosely gather up hair, though.

It's better to put a silk scarf or cap over it. This protects it from the roughness of the pillow case and helps it to grow healthier.
