Yes it is in the bible, as part of the Laws found in Dueturonomy. A woman at that time survived only under the protection of a man, if she was a virgin, it was under her father, if she was married her father no longer claimed her and she must be taken care of by her husband. If a woman was raped, she was no longer a virgin, and of no use to her father because she would not be able to be married, because no man would want used goods. So the law was put into place as a way of protecting a woman from becoming destitute. The man had to pay her father the bride price (dowery) and had to marry her, plus he would be unable to divorce her. THis way, the man could not run away from the act he had commited. To us, in today's society this doesnt make sense, but back then, this was a way of protecting a woman and hopefully served as a deterent for men who could not keep thier hands of what was not thiers.

Keep reading and remember that we don't live under the Old Testament laws today. Rape is sinful for men & woman. Any person who rapes another is huilty and will suffer the same consequences, both legal (prison time) and spiritual (when judged by God). The punishment in OT times for those caught in illicit sexual relations was for both to be stoned. There were certain exceptions, in the case of virgin women. But for the rest, stoning was the penalty.

God has both called man and women to be different things in life therefore it is not shocking that sometimes the rules are slightly different. BTW, in their culture there were complications when it came to rape. A raped woman was considered "dirty" and unclean. It was a great dishonor. But in todays society, we view honor differently and we wouldnt have any problem marrying a raped woman if she met our criteria well enough and she wasnt too psycho.

BUT At least if it was a misunderstanding or what have you, then they get married and live happily. If you talk to police, many rape victims recant because they figure out they were lying and didnt properly explain the role of their involvement. I know one of my old friends was accused of rape and the girl (who I knew also) later told the WHOLE story that she merely wanted to stop while they were halfway through the act as she consented.

In any event, if they dont get along they could have divorced and then the womans honor was intact and she was free to remarry. Its not like they were handcuffed for life to each other. BTW>If anybody did rape your daughter, they could always get revenge for dishonoring her as happened with one of davids sons. AND if the rape was done in a brutal way, that could get you a death penalty. Just some things to consider.

God knows what is just even though sometimes we DONT. Look at todays society, we cut babies out of women and kill them just because the mother doesnt want to be the mother. How do you think someone from back then wouldve reacted if you told them we would be doing that in the future? They would probably be more disgusted than how you view their rape policy.

So is Solomon's order to cut the baby in half. That's what makes the Bible so deep. What it actually is is a call to think, consider what the real issues and consequences are, from the depth of your heart and your own unique individuality. Notice there's a way out for everyone in the laws you describe. All the girl has to do is say, "He did it!" and all the guy has to do is pay the consequences by marrying her. Then, going by the letter of the law, he can divorce her later. Sounds as much fun as my neighborhood today. Or, as Jesus said, "Moses said that because of the hardness of your hearts." Fairness does not come from laws, but how they are applied.

Hmm well back in t he day

they kind of killed non virgins on their wedding night

so if a man had raped a woman, they thought, what better way to redeem her lost honor by marrying her to the man and forcing him to take care of her.

Thats how it was done back then. But yes ofcourse he should have been hanged and stoned to death or something.

One significant difference, if the guy is seduced he is willing; if the gal is raped she is not.
I agree that our present society has an inequality in it regarding sex. Our (USA) society virtually congratulates a guy for having sex (non-rape or incest) before marriage, but the gal tends to be frowned upon; especially if she gets pregnant.

Exod 22:16 reads, "If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife." This is the closest reference in the Bible to what you're talking about, but it's not rape; it's consentual sex.

Yes, from 2000 years ago. That was how it was back then, but society has evolved.

Deuteronomy:

If a betrothed virgin is raped in the city and doesn't cry out loud enough, then "the men of the city shall stone her to death." 22:23-24

If a man rapes an unbetrothed virgin, he must pay her father 50 shekels of silver and then marry her. 22:28

If a man marries, then decides that he hates his wife, he can claim she wasn't a virgin when they were married. If her father can't produce the "tokens of her virginity" (bloody sheets), then the woman is to be stoned to death at her father's doorstep. 22:13-21

Romans

Paul explains that "the natural use" of women is to act as sexual objects for the pleasure of men. 1:27

Yeah, it's in there.

But I'm sure it was just the law of their time, one of the parts that don't apply to our lives today...in lieu of the notion that it's God's Word, infallible and 100% true.
