I recommend French. Don't study Portuguese because you don't even like it, and that's a bad start. German IS difficult, although it's very useful, so that's an option too. As you said, Italian, as much as I love it, is kind of a waste of time if what you're looking for is a useful language. It's mainly only spoken in Italy. But think that Spanish and Italian are the most similar two languages that come from Latin. French is a useful language, it's spoken by many people and it's not that complicated. I studied it for five years and if you know Spanish, well, it's not that hard. The only problem is pronunciation, since, like you said, it's complicated. If you're good at languages, it won't be that big of a deal. So... Study something you like. And if you aim to learn something useful, stick with German or French.

In Africa, Spanish is spoken in Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla which are part of Spain. It is co-official with French in Equatorial Guinea, a small country of 500 000 people where it is the prevalent language. Also, Spanish is co-official with Arabic in the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Western Sahara) [citation needed] where it is widely spoken. Small Spanish-speaking communities exist in northern Morocco.
