I just went through this with my dobie. We had her ears cropped at 9 weeks and we have only had to tape hers once. The whole surgery cost $320 that included anestia, surgery, over-night stay, pain med, and 5 ear tappings. But how old it she? Some puppies ears stand right after, but then some puppies need their ears taped. They will usually use a small tampon and wrap it in gauze and that will cause them to stand. Here are some pics of what they will "look like taped up"

After having them cropped, the ears have to be taped for up to 6 months or else they will never stand. The vet that preformed the crop often includes in the price of the crop the cost of bringing the dog in to have them taped.

Unless you are showing the puppy and the breed standard says that the ears MUST be cropped, then there is NO reason to crop the ears.
As far as taping - it's to get the alert upright appearance of cropped ears. The only cost is the tape that you use and the time you commit.

it cost me $250 to crop my dogs ears. My dogs recovered without any problems and did not appear to be in any pain afterwards. I also hear that dobermans with uncropped ears are prone to infection. however, i'm sure there will be those to argue that one. I'm a nurse therefore I know what signs to look for pain other than howling, scratching, moaning, etc. The ears are stitched along the outer edges. The stitches are removed after 10 days and then you begin posting them. There a several methods of posting them and can be found on the internet. There is also a quick brace system that works well at www.hoytt.com. who claim using their system the dogs ears will be standing in 90days. It really depends on the length of the crop, thickness of the cartridge and if the dog wants to make it stand. my 5 month old female has thin cartridge and i think she close to being finished with wrapping. my 9 month old male had thick cartridge. his right ear stands perfectly and he is able to hold the left up when he wants. i am still wrapping his. now you have to consider he is well over 100 lbs and is very large. my breeder said she had to wrap his ears until he was around a year. once you get the hang of it, its not bad. they scratch at their ears because they don't like the tubing in there, but otherwise tolerate it pretty well. Neither mind me wrapping them. there are 3 types of crop so be sure to tell your vet which one you want. some vets will wrap the ears for you. some vets use the bell crop which is the shortest and they don't have to be wrapped. however, i don't like this look at all on the doberman at all. i went for the middle length. you can see my dogs at dogster their names are diesel and zoe. good luck with your decision and i hope i was of some help.

You moved the supports and now they don't work. Put them back where they were, or take him back to the vet who cropped his ears and have them retaped. Do it quickly, or the ears may never stand.

Taping the ears after cropping them is what forces them to stand up. If not done right, the ears will fall anyway. Not tomention how CRUEL it is to do this to a dog's ears. It serves absolutely NO purpose other than looks and does nothing but cause unnecessary pain. I would never imagine doing that to any dog.

Don't crop the ears. Cropped ears look so bad. Full length ears make dobies look noble.

DON'T CROP THE EARS! This is extremely painful, inhumane, and is only done because the show rings require it (which is agregious). In many countries, it is illegal to do things like cropping ears and docking tails, and it should be illegal here as well.
DON'T CROP THE EARS!
Besides, dobermans with floppy ears are really cute!!!
