Most 289's came with 3.00, there were some options though,

check the links in our group, in the mean time, I'll look,
My little black Mustang book says for a 66 289 at, the 2v came with 2.80 and the 4v (A code)came with 3.00, so look for a "C" code, it has the 2.80's. Actially the only options were on the HiPo (3.50/3.89 opt)and sixes, which won't do you any good.

You could go to a 9 inch, your can get all kinds of gears for it :)

Yes you can. You need to get a ring and pinion set for the gearing you want. You should probably have them installed by a professional as there are clearances, torque specs etc. that need to be just right or your diff may leak or grind up the new gears.

you should be able to, especially if theyre aftermarket gears. go to www.jegs.com or another place like that and search for rear end gears there. on chevys, there are different carriers for certain gear ratio sets (i think its 3.08 and numerically lower or higher), but aftermarket companies make almost all gear ratios for both carriers. ford may work the same way. just curious, why the change to a taller rear end? if youre going for mileage, thats not going to make a really noticeable difference, i dont think. you might just look at getting a bigger set of tires for the rear. you get the same gearing effect, and personally, i think it looks cool on those old stangs like that.
