Police volunteers...Theres different types...Theres EXPLORERS, Reserves, Volunteers forces!!!
Honesty...From being part of a Dept...
Explorers are the ones that are between 14-21...They do office work and go though a academy...Reserves are the ones who have regular jobs but wants a secondary like job and they go though a semi-hard academy...Volunteers forces are the ones who missed out on being the REAL thing meanly because they don't know anything...
Explorers are GREAT when they know what to do...they have about 2 meeting a month and they do formation and stuff...They have SGT,L.T and CAPTS...The longer your in the post and the better you get there rank up...They do officer work and ride-alongs as much as they want...They help out with paper work and what not...You can develop friendships if the officers...one big family!!!
Reserves are basically what I already said...there 18+ but most of them are in there late 30s and few of them are retired officers...They have meetings as well and only there limited on how much they do...But there great guys/women...
Volunteers forces piss me off honesty...They have meetings and go to fund riser and what not but when if comes to them riding out...they kinda suck...They normally don't know what there doing...but a few of them are great people and fun to talk to and a few know what to do...There 18+ but most of them are in there older age!!!
What it comes down to...It helps everyones help and honesty...Without them...Sheriffs and PD wouldn't have fund riser or actives for the kids and what not...Becauses the Government doesn't want to pay the overtime for the officers!!!

didn't somebody already ask this question a couple of days ago. they are great if they only work around the office. keep them off the road. they have good intentions, but in reality create a bunch of unnecessary work for people. i've been an officer for almost 13 years and have worked almost my entire career without volunteers and would just assume leave it that way. now perhaps the records/training staff, etc would have a different opinion.
i think you were asking for an honest answer, so there you go.
if you are talking about reserve officers, etc. i think most are good, but the ones i have run into are glorified riders with guns who are more of a liability. they are great for transports, babysitting prisoners, etc. but again we could really function without them too.

If you're referring to reserve police officers and deputy sheriffs, overall, they are a huge help. They supplement "on the street" manpower for their respective agencies. They help fill in for field officers who are either sick or on vacation. They help reduce department overtime. They help in jail or court operations. They fly prisoners from venue to venue in their private planes for court appearances at no charge to their departments. They supplement firearm instruction activities for officers and deputies. They volunteer to assist during police academy training activities to enhance the recruit experience. Overall, they greatly benefit society and their communities with their unselfish contributions.
