Overcharging a battery is always bad. Whether or not it happens depends on whether or not the charger or your device can turn off the charge at the right time. There are still some very dumb devices out there that never stop charging. These result in badly overheated batteries, shortened service life, even exploding batteries and melt-downs. I'm sorry to have to say this, but, read the instructions.

I always leave my iPod in the charger unless I'm using it. I've had my iPod for 2 years and it still works fine. However, once it DID overheat when it was left in the charger. It survived, though.

Once the charge is full, it stops charging.
