many times the driver does know, sometimes he is even part of the crime, such as hydraulically controlled body drop and lift pistons i have seen at superspeedways, but other times they are not included in the plan and are just as surprised as you and i when nascar lowers the boom on them,it's been my experience that if a crew chief cheats today he probably cheated yesterday and will cheat again tomorrow, nascar penalties are a joke,if i gain 350 points a year cheating and you take back 50 i'm still 300 points ahead of the game,if you fine a 7 million dollar a year team 50k so what cheating made them an extra 300k any way, nascar will never get rid of cheating until they suspend the whole team driver and all for 3or 4 races and fine them 100k each for the driver, crew chief and car owner and that still wouldn't bother guys who owned 5 teams, being a non-cheater my whole life and watching and hearing of all the cheating going on i finally am forced to say,if they are all cheating how can i keep up if i don't follow the cheaters, after all presidents, senators and ceo's lie why should crew chiefs be any different,by the way toyota has a policy that only toyota engineers are allowed to touch toyota motors, this keeps their technology safe from crew chiefs who might defect to dodge, ford or chevy,it also leaves them holding the bag if there is something in that manifold, besides mikey wouldn't cheat, would he? I would bet that 80% of all teams out there are cheating one way or another, todays slick teams employ chemists, engineers and aerodynamistists that 10 years ahead of nascar

Most drivers aren't hands-on much when it comes to their cars. Unless they were to work on that specific car at any time before inspection, it is unlikely that a driver would be aware of anything illegal that has been done to his car. Drivers are typically not present when their cars do through the inspection process, just members of their crew so they would not be aware of any violations until they were informed by whomever informs them that an infraction has taken place.

It's possible, I would guess sometimes they know it, other times they don't. It all comes down to whether the crew chief tells the driver or not, because drivers are rarely directly involved with what is on the car, they only tell the crew how the car feels and what adjustments to make.

Sometimes. It depends on the driver. Some drivers want to know stuff about the car and some do not. I think drivers should now find out whats going on with the car seince the crews want to cheat now.

OOOO, now this is a toughy. Sometimes yes, Sometimes no. It depends. Its as simple as this, plausible deniability. They might not tell there drivers so if the driver is asked about whatever, he can truely say he doesn't know, BUTTTTT i would think that 7 times out of 10, the driver knows. Drivers aren't morons. I don't think Micheal Waltrip knew about his intake manifold however. He seemed wayyy to confused on live tv a few minutes after he found out about it. Poor micheal.

No, they do not always know what is going on with each aspect of what the team did when building the car. For many reasons... One being that the drivers are so damn busy as it is they don't always get the chance to sit around and watch the team tear apart a car and piece it back together.

Drivers are always climbing out of their cars after a practice session or whatever and quickly their PR team is right there with a golf cart whisking them away to do autograph sessions and whatever else the sponsors need them to do.

In most cass no.But there are tmes that he may have an idea that something is going on.
Watch the drivers face in the interview when anounced.Read the body language. Some of them know things were done.
As much as we would not like to see it maybe the drivers need to be supended. How many times be for the cheating would stop or slow down.

In most cases the driver is not aware of anything that may be considered illegal.

With the exception of very few drivers most do not know what is happening under the hood. The only time a driver will know what is happening is he/she is told what they are changing during practice, like changing a shock, sping or gear. As for the what is happening on a motor, thats what the motor shop is for, and the tuners at the track.

Most drivers know but they just playing dumb (some aren't playing) With NASCAR rules there is a grey area and the crew chiefs play in that grey area just to see what they can get by with. Like in the "old Days" it isn't cheating unless you get caught
