start>right click my computer >click properties> hardware then device manager. Any thing with a yellow exclamation mark or question mark needs to be re-installed. you can do this by clicking on the offender and see if windows can do it for you , or if you know the make , then just get the drivers off the net.

First, you need to determine what kind of sound card you have.

NOTE: the previous posts don't show how to find out what your current sound card is, only how to figure out if it's missing a driver. The following directions may resolve your problem EVEN IF device manager doesn't show that the driver is missing.
In Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, or XP

Click the Start Button and then click the "Programs" folder.
Next, click the "Accessories" and then the "System Information" folder.
Within the "System Information" window, click the "+" symbol next to "Components".
Click "Sound Device" (or "Multimedia" and then "Sound Device") and in the right-side of the window you should be able to locate complete information about the sound card.

Now, write down the "Name" of the sound card and search for the driver using DriverGuide.com or a google search: http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?action=wizard_step_1

If this doesn't work, your sound card needs to be replaced.

it certainlt sounds like the drivers have been deleted, i think your sound card is the onboard type which is buit into the motherboard,( dont panic) the reason think this is because if you had a seperate soundcard windows would have detected it and ask you to install drivers, you dont say that so do the following it should fixit ok

check if ya sound devices are there or not, go to run, type in 'sndvol32' (without the punctuations) then click ok, what comes up???? a message saying there are no devices install or something like that yes, in that case goto www.driverguide.com, register it is free, and in search look for AC97Realtek sound drivers (you want to look for 1 that has got above 80percent of people downloading it saying they are now happy)look at all the ones that come up for what you want and chose the one that is biggest because that is sure to have all the drivers you need
download and install good luck
then when you have installed restart your pc, goto run and type sndvol32 click ok and the sound devices should appear
