People begin with so many inbuilt flaws, inconsistencies and weaknesses. As you learn and grow, you continually strive toward being better person - a more perfect sculpture if you will. In the end, you will never be perfect. You can only achieve the closest approximation possible within the limits of your character.

But he does not state that the timber is beyond redemption. The final product (or you, in this case) can be beautiful despite of, and perhaps because of, its flaws.

I think it's saying that man is born flawed "made from crooked timber"... And since man is born flawed he can never become perfect because he was never perfect to begin with.. "nothing entirely straight can be carved".. Make sense?

I would think he is referring to one who tells lies.
