So while Christ’s genuine followers are “no part of the world,” they are still in the world of human society and must go on “walking in wisdom toward those on the outside.” (John 17:16; Colossians 4:5) As long as Jehovah allows the superior authorities to operate as his minister, we will show proper respect for them. (Romans 13:1-4) While remaining neutral as to politics, we pray respecting “kings and all those who are in high station,” particularly when these are called upon to make decisions that could affect freedom of worship. We will continue doing this “in order that we may go on leading a calm and quiet life with full godly devotion and seriousness,” so that ‘all sorts of men will be saved.’—1 Timothy 2:1-4.

It means that when you walk with Christ, it makes you different from others but not in a bad way. Actually in a way that you can help others by your example. If you went along with the taboos of the world such as drugs, fornication, etc. then they would love you because you would be on their same level. Christ chooses people that he knows he can use to help bring someone else out of darkness and into the marvelous light. The world hated him and crucified him for nothing wrong that he had done, are we better than he was.

The world (i.e., people who aren't followers of Christ) hates Christians, because Christians don't belong to the non-Christian world, and do not do the stuff that pagans do. They want those things to not be wrong, but although they do not acknowledge it, they do know that they are wrong.

Christians do not do those things (even though the world loudly yells (observe some of the responses to this answer) that "everybody does that" or "everyone's doing it" or however they choose to put it), and in effect (by not doing them) condemn them in wrongful people who actually do.

So, "If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you."

Jesus was saying there is a clear division between those who belong to Him and those who don't. That He as a person is a divisive issue. There is general opposition in the world to true, distinctive Christianity. People get upset at it.
Did you know there were more Christian martyrs in the world during the 20th century than during all the previous centuries combined?
It does not mean that every believer will be hated by every non-believer. It is a general principle.

Those who believe in and accept Christ as Savior and Lord, do not belong to this world, they belong to the kingdom of God. We live here in our bodies but our real home is Heaven. The world hated Jesus and it hates His followers. If you doubt that just keep reading the remarks on Yahoo.

Jesus wants us to be 'in' the world but not 'of' the world.
When a Christian follows Jesus and does not partake in the worldly activities, then others will make fun of you for being different.
Scenerio: If I was invited to a wild party and I chose not to go, then I am not partaking of the world and its inequities.
When I stand strong in the Lord and refuse to go to such events, then I am not 'of' the world....

jesus is speaking to some of the first "born again" Christians.
Christians are "changed" and no longer are of the world but of God. That does not mean perfect.....only changed.
the world, being mostly made up of anti-God non-believers, hates all things that have to do with God, including His saved children, and unwittingly in most cases serve Satan.

We are aliens of this world even though we walk through it. Once we have said good bye to old self and we have put a new self on... we are then out of the world in which is evil and full of hate... and just walking through it because our journey's pathway is leading to the LIGHT . the Son of God.. to the Bridegroom.

I don't think your numbers and your quote are in sinc. If they believed what the world believed spiritually then they would get along fine with the rest of the world. But since christ called them to his ministry and they followed christ.now the world hates them just as it hated christ. christ once said "when the world hates you , remember that it hated Me first.
