Are you wanting a class that teaches religions and "certain religions", or teaches ABOUT religions? You want a class that summarizes the religions of the world?
In other words, you would have no problem with your child learning about Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Wiccan, Buddhist, Hindu, or even Satanist religions? (and please don't give me crap about Satanism not being a religion.....because it IS a religion. Just because you may not believe in it, or like what they teach, does not mean it is any less of a religion than your own.)
Anyway, and if so, do you think this should be an elective class, or mandatory?

If it is an elective class (where the child decides to take it), then I have no problem with religion being taught in public school. As long as it is ALL of the religions.

I think that religion should be kept out of all public schools.

maybe as a senior college credit course. and a class like that would be wonderful in college. but in public schools people are just way to immature to handle it. it would quickly become a platform for people to voice their opinions about the religions that do not meet thteir approval.

and it would be very hard to make a cirriculum that would be fair.
furthermore the teacher would almost have to be a devout athiest. because a teacher of any religion could not possibly teach the class without giving a special nudge to their own religion.

let the schools teach math and language skills. teach them science and history. i will teach religion in my home thank you very much.

Hello Abby C.. :)

I was born in 1950..

When I went to school we were brought up and taught Christian morals (though I was an Atheist).. (now children are killing other children and even doing drugs in school).. :(

We Respected our Teachers and our Peers (now children are swearing at, beating up and even killing the Teachers).. :(

Girls wore skirts or dresses..(you knew which gender they were, if you were walking behind them).. :(

We took pride in Saluting the Flag (now you can burn the Flag).. :(

The worst thing we did to get in trouble, is to skip school..(now children try to blow up or burn down the school).. :(

When the Teacher would ask a question we raised our hand to give an answer (now the Teacher has to be wary of having a knife thrown at them).. :(

When a Police Officer came to our school they came to help us and show us how we can help others..(now usually when the Police go to school they have to bring a swat team with them, to stop the violence).. :(

If a child was to hurt themselves at school, the school nurse was there to help and the parents were called.. (now the child is hurt and the Teachers or the School is sued by the parents)..

===============================================

I just want the Public School System to be safer and enjoyable for your children, like it was when I was in school..

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

I took just such an elective World Religions class in high school in the US (Phoenix) in the 1970's. It was very informative and I approve of that; however, ensuring it is not a propagandist tool would be difficult these days.

I think is it important for children to be taught ABOUT religions in general to better understand the world around them.
I think it is wrong to teach children one specific religion and try to convince them that its the ultimate and only truth. That is brainwashing.

Religion has NO place in public education, but I would approve of a class in "comparative religion" if it were offered as an elective.

Nobody....but NOBODY gets spiritual priority in public education.

That should be regarded as a history class, an open view of religious growth. Knowledge shouldn't be feared, it's the lack of such knowledge that may endanger our salvation. Sort out the confusion until you find the Truth.

I think that Christianity should be taught in public school because it is true. www.equip.org
