BRACES CAN BE PAINFUL ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED. THEY USUALLY PAIN FOR A FEW DAYS APPROX 3 DAYS AFTER BEING ADJSUTED. IF LIGHT FORCES ARE USED THEN THE PAIN IS LESS. IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR PAIN THRESHOLD. IF YOU HAVE A LOW PAIN THRESHOLD, THEN THE PAIN TO YOU MAY BE WORSE. IT DOES NOT HURT TO INFORM YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT YUR ANXIETY. PAINKILLERS CAN BE PRESCRIBED, BUT PARACETEMOL IS VERY EFFECTIVE. YOUR BODY ADJUSTS TO THE PAIN SOMEHOW.
YOU MUST ALSO ASK YOURSELF....DO YOU WANT STRAIGHT TEETH AND HOW BADLY. IF YOUR ANSER IS YES, THEN THE DISCOMFORT AND SLIGHT PAIN SHOULD NOT PUT YOU OFF!!

There's nothing to be afraid of when the ortho puts them on. The procedure is actually quite simple. He first glues these square-looking things on your teeth which doesn't hurt at all, it's just a really strong glue on the surface of your teeth. Then he hooks these wire things through all of the square-like things which doesn't hurt at all. You'll rince and then he'll tell you what to do to take good care of your teeth. The next couple of days, it'll be sore, no kidding, but you can always take Ibuprofene or Tylenol to make it better. Distract yourself by doing something that always amuses you. After a week or so, the soreness will fade away and you'll get used to the rough feeling of the braces against your inner lips and gums. And for spacers, its a bit pressure when he puts it on and is only sore for one day and that's it%2

I have braces on and I think they're fine. I got my top ones on a month before my bottoms and I have to say my top ones didn't hurt mostly at all, just eating hard things the next day. I got my bottom ones on last week and they hurt a lot more than the top ones. It also will depend how you react to pain, because if you are really sensitive it will hurt more. You'll be fine and you'll be happy that after all the work you'll have a nice perfect smile. =D

Braces hurt a lot but it's worth it. I've had them and sometimes it may cut your gums and you'll find yourself a bit tired after getting your braces due to not even being able to do the simplest things. This is because if your teeth just collide for a nanosecond, you'll feel like you broke your ankle or something of that level. After about three days, it will stop hurting but it will take awhile to get used to. Best not to chew gum while you have them, there's no severe harm in chewing gum but it's just best not to. Remember to brush everywhere, even behind the metal!

They hurt very much. Be prepared for pain and discomfort. Getting them tightened is the worst. If anyone says otherwise they have never had braces.

both my kids had braces and they did hurt, especially right after a visit. I made sure they ate before we went and took aspirin or painkiller of some sort before.
