I rode with my hubby once while he was on duty (police) and I had him take me home cause the siren was so loud gave me a headache not to mention how loud it was! How can officers, emt, firefighters not be deaf to the sound of the sirens! Do they have a secret or what?

If they are responding code 3 (lights & siren) they have many things on their minds and are not hearing the siren...they have to be aware of traffic - making sure they do not cause an accident, they are thinking ahead to the call they are enroute to...possible senarios etc, too many others things to occupy their thoughts than to hear the loudness of the siren......

It sounds like you are really sensitive. When the siren's on on a Crown Victoria (which is the make for well over half the police cars in the US), you just can't hear it that well. There have been times where I wasn't sure the siren was on. It's not only easy to ignore, often you have to check it or change it up (which most sirens can do) to make sure it is on and, more importantly, make sure the other drivers are paying attention to it.

yea, hopefully not be at an agency that the sirens are on that much. holy smokes
Or, make sure the siren is mounted outside the car.
The sirens are typically mounted in the front grill area projecting the sounds forward, not towards the interior of the vehicle. Its usually not too bad.
Your hubby is not patrolling with an amish buggy is he? (sorry it was too funny to pass up)
Good luck and Godspeed

The loudness of the siren from inside the vehicle is far under what it would take to affect your hearing. It sounds like you were sensitive to the tone, not the volume, which some people are.

People can learn to not hear anything with practice. I used to work in retail. There was always 'background music' on the intercom. I always heard pages, but rarely knew if the 'background music' was even working.
glamour04111: Many police departments allow 'ride alongs'. They have to be pre-arranged in most cases, but they ARE allowed.

They probably are. They never listen to me when they pull me over to harrass me, toss my car, break my taillight or beat me up.
