You're going to need time to mourn so I wouldn't recommend getting a new dog right away but you could try volunteering at an animal shelter. This way you are helping other animals like your puppy and they can help cheer you up. The last thing you need is to bring a puppy into a home where everyone is still upset over the loss of another dog. You need to recover some so you can devote all your attention to a new puppy. I lost my K-9 partner back in September to cancer and to this day I still cry every once in awhile but sometimes I get the feeling he's right next to me. You're doing the right thing by letting him go peacefully and things will get better. Hang in there.

I always found comfort in James Dickey's poem 'The Heaven of Animals.'

Know that you're doing the right thing, the selfless thing. Many people try all kinds of painful experimental procedures because they are too selfish to let their pets go.

Ask the vet to spend some time alone with him before and after the injection. Bring his special blanket so that he can be wrapped in it while he is dying.

Have him cremated and get an 'ash return' from the vet. they can put the ashes in a nice wooden box and you can put a picture of your dog on the box.

Donate 100 bucks, or what you can afford, to a charity that helps sick or stray dogs.

Finally, definitely, definitely adopt a new stray dog. He won't replace your old dog but he'll become special in his own way. Also this way your dog's death will at least be saving another dog. Wouldn't your dog want that?

Don't feel embarrassed to rely on family and friends in this sad time.

Too love, is to experience sorrow. I wish I could offer you a shoulder to lean on during this difficult time. Tonight, feed him all of his favorite foods, and massage his tired bones. Tell him how much you love him, but there's nothing else you can do, as it's his time to cross the Rainbow Bridge, tomorrow, without you. Be strong for him when the time comes, and hold him close to your heart. Because one thing that will never change, is the love you had for him. I'm very sorry.

I am so very sorry for you and your family. You have to do something that will be so difficult for you. Please keep in mind that what you are doing is out of love for your dear guy. You do not want him to suffer so you are doing what is best for him. I wish I could somehow take your pain away but I can't, I can only keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Be with him at the the end, let him see you, let him feel your touch, let him hear your voice, and let him feel your love. You are a very brave person and I wish you all the best.

Saw this poem on here last night. Hope it eases some of your grief.

Heaven's Doggie Door

My best friend closed his eyes last night
As his head was in my hand
The doctor said he was in pain
And it was hard for him to stand.
The thoughts that scurried through my head
As I cradled him in my arms
Were of his younger puppy years
And OH his many charms.

Today there was no gentle nudging
With an intense "I Love You" gaze
Only a heart that's filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.
But an angel just appeared to me
And he said, "You should cry no moe"
God also loves our canine friends
He installed a Doggie Door.

Wow...going through a pet's death is extremely hard. i don't know if there is a way that works for everyone. When I had to put down my cocker spaniel it was HORRIBLE. My family and I think that she might've suffered from tumors too. What I suggest, this is only my opinion, is maybe keep some pictures of your dog when they were young and healthy, and remind you of why you loved them so dearly.

Hope this helps,
Kelsy

It will take years to get over it. It will be very hard for a while but it will get better. :( You need to get another dog, you can't replace the one you have but it will help fill an empty spot. I know this from experience. Good luck tomorrow and just remember you'll meet up again with them someday :)

I loved my dog so much, he was an amazing corgi cross that was pretty old 13 or so. He unfortunately got a tick and because he was old we didn't really notice until it was too late. (he often tripped on steps etc). He got really sick and I rushed him to the animal hospital but they said it was unlikely he'd pull through.

I just remember not hesitating to put him down. I couldn't bear to see him in pain. Its very upsetting and i'm sorry its happening. But just remember if you love him you won't let him suffer.
