You can use a butter knife instead of a toothpick. Just insert the knife straight down into the cake middle (as if you are trying to stab it in it's center), and if it comes out clean the cake is done. A fock is not the best thing to use to check doneness of a cake, but if you have nothing else, you could probably use the handle end with success. A skewer is the stick-like thing that is used for certain types of cooking (such as, shish ke-babs, or satay dishes). They can look like really long toothpicks, and are usually made out of bamboo or wood, sometimes they are made out of metal. In my opinion, the wood skewers are terrible because they burn most easily of all these types of skewers. I hope this helps, good luck.

Yeah you can use a fork place it near or in the middle and if the fork comes out clean the cake is done. A skewer is sort of a long toothpick that's used for Kabobs of meat and Largely diced Veggies for the Grill

How about a long skinny nail--like a finishing nail? A secondary test is to look and when the cake starts to look firm (done), then press about 1 inch in from the edge with one finger to see if it FEELS done. If you leave a dent, it isn't done. However, experienced cooks know not to open the oven door during the baking process unless they are certain they're at the last 5 minutes or so--you lose perhaps 20degrees or more by opening the oven, and doing that too soon or too often can cause your cake to fall.

You can always use a clean butter knife; it should come out mostly clean with a few crumbs sticking to the sides. You don't want it to be gooey with unbaked batter.

A skewer is a long, thin metal or wooden spike. Usually used in making kebabs on the grill, but also good for using in a pinch if you don't have a toothpick.

A fork WILL NOT ruin your cakes -I use it all the time, at least once a week. Just make sure the cake looks and feels firm on top, before inserting the fork.
the fork should come out of the cake clean, with no batter.

No knife. All you are tyring to do is find out if it's done in the middle. You can usually find out by touching the middle of the cake gently with a couple of fingers (it's not hot). If you leave a dent, it probably needs a couple of minutes more. If it mostly bounces back, it's done!
Also. the cake will generally come away from the side of the pan.
Next time, make sure your oven temperature is right - invest $5-$6 dollars in a good oven thermometer. Good luck!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/LAgzj
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

A fork will not go in deep enough! a skewer is the wooden stick that you use to make shish- kebab or the one used to truss a turkey , you may use them to test your cake!

Really, anything that's sharp, long, skinny, and won't make too big a hole in the cake will do. A fork is just fine. As long as you'll be able to see if it comes out clean is usable. A small knife will work too
