I am in my 2nd semester in College, and the College that I attend is about 180 miles away from home. I go home sometimes, but definitely not as much as I want to. For the most part, I think I am doing good up here, and then I have some awful moments, and I just want to go home and never come back. I miss my mom, I miss my family, my home, my hometown. I miss everything about my old "life".

What can I do? I need some advice. Not only things that I can physically do, but what things can I say to myself or do mentally to keep myself going?

Homesick for months,
Todd

Todd, I was the same way at first but then I got caught up in campus activities. You have to push yourself out there and get involved with clubs, sports events, dances, dating, the rec center and making new friends. I know you want advice about what to do mentally but really it is the physical side that will get you out of your mood. And finally, just imagine how it would be if you didn't go to college and stayed home. All of your friends would be away at school; you would be in some low level job and you would be miserable .... more miserable than you are now. Things change. Your hometown isn't as great as you have built it up to be. You have to prepare for your future and make your mom proud of you.

Stay in touch. email your Mom and others at home and share your school happenings with them. Make your new surroundings a part of your family's experiences. They would probably love to trade places with you! Let them experience the adventure with you. (Stay positive, don't bum them out.)

Keep photographs of the people you miss where you can see them at the end of the day. You will feel a little corny, but talk to them. Say good night, etc.

The best way to avoid depressing "poor me" thoughts is to help someone else. Find a student to tutor or a charity to support. Trust me, there are lots of people who need you!
