My fiance gets pulled over the other night driving my car. It happened to be unregistered. It expired like 35 days ago. He gave HER a ticket, and not me (even though the car was registered under my name)...I registered the car online and paid my $44 to the NYS DMV.

Is it possible that the cops could send me a ticket for not having a registered car?

If they were going to give me a ticket, they would have to give it to me by then right?

Can they send one after the fact?

Anyone know NYS law and how NYS cops work?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As a driver of any car you have to make sure that the vehicle documents are in the car (ownership, insurance slip) and make sure the validation sticker on the plate is up to date. The driver will get the ticket if anyone of these is missing. The driver can also get tickets for burnt headlights and loud mufflers too.
Here in Ontario there are charges specifically for the registered owner (example: owner allow operation of motor vehicle no insurance)

I usually use discretion when handing out these tickets if the person is only borrowing the vehicle for that day, but I legally can hand them out if I want.

Show proof of registration to a local police force, and they will sign the ticket off...It's a warning if done in a timely manner.

She was cited because she was the driver and in possession of the vehicle at the time of the stop.

You're clear, you have corrected the problem. There will be no further action other than answering the summons.

Have her appear and with proof of registration and it will be dismissed.
