Millions of computers trying to update themselves from a very limited set of update servers is one reason.

Another is that there is a significant amount of effort by many people to make life difficult for Microsoft. By writing viruses, spyware, and launching DDOS attacks on a constant basis against the update servers, this goal is achieved.

I never noticed. But I do have my computer set up for automatic updates in the middle of the night while I'm in bed.

Because Microsoft is cheap when it comes to service, expensive when you want to buy something from them. They dont have enough servers for the millions of people who have to download what Microsoft calls "updates" which are really bug fixes. Dump it and get Kubuntu for free at www.kubuntu.org to fix it.
