Aside from the fact that the East doesn't acknowledge the primacy of the Bishop of Rome(Pope).....they are one and the same in doctrines and beliefs. We profess the same Nicene/APostolic creed. The worship, language, rites may may vary but one and the same in origin. Same holy sacraments, same saints are honored. The only noticable diff is that priests in the East are not bound to be celibate. It is a choice in the Catholic Church (9 years to decide). God bless. In summary, not much difference.

The East-West Schism, or Great Schism, divided Chalcedonian Christianity into Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) branches, i.e. Western Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Though normally dated to 1054, the East-West Schism was actually the result of an extended period of estrangement between Latin and Greek Christendom. The primary causes of the Schism were disputes over papal authority—the Pope claimed he held authority over the four Eastern Greek-speaking patriarchs, and over the insertion of the filioque clause into the Nicene Creed by the Western Church. Eastern Orthodox today claim that the primacy of the Patriarch of Rome was only honorary, and that he has authority only over his own diocese and does not have the authority to change the decisions of Ecumenical Councils. There were other, less significant catalysts for the Schism, including variance over liturgical practices and conflicting claims of jurisdiction.

The Church split along doctrinal, theological, linguistic, political, and geographic lines, and the fundamental breach has never been healed. It might be alleged that the two churches actually reunited in 1274 (by the Second Council of Lyon) and in 1439 (by the Council of Basel), but in each case the councils were repudiated by the Orthodox as a whole, given that the hierarchs had overstepped their authority in consenting to these so-called "unions". Further attempts to reconcile the two bodies have failed.

The jap Orthodox church homes broke from under the administration of the Roman Catholics for the two political and theological motives, generally Rome's changing of the Nicene Creed to state that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the two the father and the Son, while the unique apostolic faith and Christ Himself mentioned the Holy Spirit proceeds from the father, yet in Christ's call and at His request. additionally the jap orthodox stick to the "Greek" rites that are very such as the unique faith and practices of the Church while the Roman Catholics have presented many transformations to the two doctrines and practices.

The main difference is the Roman Catholics accept all Ecumenical councils (though not the Eastern Orthodoxy's 8th and 9th).

The Eastern Orthodoxy accepts only the first seven and a few accept their own 8th and 9th.

They are listed at the following link:

EO priests can be married prior to accepting the role of a priest.
EO still hold that only the priest and certian men can enter the holy of holies (altar area).
they are more strict on the modesty in their churches (woemn do NOT cross their legs)

there aren't too many differences - really IMO the EO has just maintained some of the older school traditions and rules.

The "Filioque" clause in the Creed of Nicea. RC's say that the Holy Spirit proceeds "from the Father and the Son" - the EO's say "from the Father" alone.

This was the major cause of the Great Schism of 1054 A.D.
