the first advisers were there just as the french were pulling out from 54 on but there was no large mobilizations of U.S. troops to Vietnam until 1962 there were 125,000 sent .then later in 1965 the official declaration of war was passed by Congress and the president ordered an additional 375,000 moor troops to Vietnam starting with the Army's air cavalry unit. thus raising the fighting strength to 400,000. Additional forces were called for but was the story throughout the war until its end in 1975. the official death toll was 58,000 Americans K.I.A.,M.I.A, and P.O.W.

Type Vietnam war into your browser then go to the History-Vietnam War site.
We were in Vietnam from 1945 to 1975. 1965 was when the first troops were sent in to actually fight the north/cong. I was in theater in 1961 & 62. The cause of what eventually occurred was LBJ wanting to run the war from the white house. Even the daily missions. Can't wage and win a war that way. Led to many young men loosing their lives for naught. Had occurred in Korea and now appears to be occurring again in Iraq.

We became heavily involved in 1965. It was at the same time when the French troops pulled-out of Vietnam.
