sorry to correct the above poster, but meade was never replaced.

meade was appointed as the commander of the army of the potomac and was never relieved of that command.

grant was given overall control of the entire theatre and travelled with the army of the potomac, but meade was never relieved of command.

it was not so much that lincoln was replacing generals because they didn't agree with his vision of how the war was to be won - lincoln simply was looking for generals who would FIGHT.

grant had stunning victories in the western theatre of the civil war and when grant and his subordinate generals infused into the army of the potomac they brought with them a winning mentality that was to never leave that army.

the soldiers knew it right away too when after sharpsburg instead of marching north, they marched south - they had just been in a bruising fight, but were happy to not be retreating from lee once again.

McClellan the little man with big ego took too much time getting ready with his overwelming force, Pope defeated at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, the bumbling Burnside sacrificed his brave men at Fredricksburg, Fighting Joe Hooker roundly defeated at Chancslorsville, and Halleck was in there somewhere, then came Meade at Gettysburg,....ending finally with Grant.

Grant was the only one he needed to remove....he commanded the Generals, accepted their advice, and applied the infomation to win the war. He did not make it up as he went along.
