Puppies should not leave their mother or litter until they are at least 8 weeks old. Not 6 weeks (barely weaned) or even 4 weeks (not yet weaned!). They still have plenty to learn from their littermates and mother about being a dog. If you want friendly, socially adaptable puppies, you will not let them go before 8 weeks old.

Generally, puppies and kittens have to be with their mother at least 8 weeks before being sold. By this time, the mother will have weaned them off her, and they can start eating dog food. Beteween 4-8 months of age, puppies and kitten begin to teeth, and dry food is recommended to ease this process. Socialization in cats and dogs starts at 6-8 weeks and lasts until 12-16 weeks. Proper handling is required to assure a good life for the cat and dog. Should a puppy or kitten be taken from their mother prior to 8 weeks, behavior problems can occur. A great book is "Know Your Dog", or The Dog Encyclopedia".

10 weeks is the ideal age to let the puppies go to new homes but 8 weeks is OK. Never sell a puppy before he is 8 weeks old as they are not properly weaned.

The fact that you need to ask this question on YA concerns me a lot. You are obviously not a good breeder if you do not even know what age you should sell the pups at.

Godess - you didn't even know how old your dog had to be to breed. I'm guessing that you went ahead with breeding your year old dog, even though we told you it was wrong.

Then, you couldn't figure out how to get them to breed and you were back on here asking for more advice to support your immorality.

Then, you couldn't figure out if your dog was even pregnant. Instead of going to a vet, you were back on here begging for at home tips. Probably because you can't afford to even take your female to the vet.

Now, here you are trying to sell the puppies that you do irresponsibly created. SHAME ON YOU. You are a backyard breeder pure & simple. You've violated virtually every ethics guideline for breeding. You are everything that the AKC, National Breed Clubs, Local Breed Clubs, the Humane Society, Animal Rescue Groups, and responsible breeders despise. YOU are the reason for overpopulation in pets.

Get your female fixed ASAP. The world doens't need more immoral irresponsible people like you filling it with poor quality puppies.

Don't you have even a SMALL conscience? Even a little tiny one?

The answer to your question is that it varies by the breed. Some are fine at 8 weeks, some should not leave the mother until closer to 12-14 weeks. Try contacting a *GOOD* breeder to find out what's appropriate for your breed. Or, are you afraid of what they'll say?

Wait at least 8-10 weeks before you get a puppy and make sure you have all the supplies before you get the puppy. And good luck with haveing the puppy at home.

At least 2 months (8 Weeks).
But that also depends on the breed for Maltese it's recomended 2 1/2 to 3 months. During that tme they learn how to be dogs and are educated by their mom are socialized with their brothers and sisters and obtain all their nutrients from their mother.

We generally wait until 8 weeks so that we are sure the puppies are weened and had a series of shots and wormer. It is usally good to wait for at Least 7 weeks some state require it..I know that California has made it illegal to sell puppies before the age of 7 weeks

After reading your questions it looks to me like you've been on here for advice every step of the way. Sad.

Give the pups away at 10 weeks (AFTER they've had all their shots) and spay the mother. You shouldn't sell them because you are not not a reputable breeder. That would not be fair to the families that want them. You obviously never got your female health tested, nor is she a champion. Therefor you cannot gaurantee anything as far as the pups' future health or temperament. You have no business breeding.

In most states by law they have to have completed their 7th week before they can be sold or given away....some states it is 8 weeks old.

A responsible breeder never lets pups go to a new home before 8 weeks and in many cases as much as 9 - 10 weeks.

The laws vary from state to state but they should stay with the mother until at least 8 weeks.
