Hi
Before downloading/installing ALOT of codecs which i wouldn't advise although i know many would . There is only 1 codec ( to date ) apart from the default codecs that install with your o.s and video/sound cards that i use and that any person should need and that is XviD-1.1.2-01112006.exe found at the link below and is of course free . and the player to play any files VLC :)
Just try that 1 and let me know if it doesn't work and i'll hold my hands up !

P.S it's personal choice but too many codecs can be worse than not enough !

depends what you really want to do and what type of video, audio you will be using. the main things you will need for AVI, DivX or Xvid video files are.

Xvid codec
DivX
Ac3 Filter
Ac3 decompressor
VLC player

all can be downloaded for free from www.free-codecs.com
i never use codec packs even though lots do use k-lite codec pack and i have never had a problem with any video or audio with the above.

Installing more than one codec pack can cause conflicts and can end in you needing to re-install the whole windows system again.
