It does hurt. Ask if they will give you some medication to take afterward. You will probably only want to drink liquids for a day or two after. Before the surgery, stock your fridge and cupboard with some soft foods....like yogurt, jello, ice cream, soup. You might even want to buy some breakfast drinks. You will get through it just fine. Good Luck and don't worry too much.

I had mine taken out last year. I didn't want to be put to sleep, so they gave me laughing gas and made my mouth numb instead. It didn't hurt when they were doing it, but my mouth was sore and kind of swollen for a couple weeks. I was able to go to school the next day with no problems, but for a week I was pretty much only able to eat soup with noodles in it.

Just be careful and keep cleaning your mouth and rinse it with something antiseptic like hydrogen peroxide. Mine got infected a few times and I had to go back to the dental office a couple times to get it cleaned out.

It was also the first operation I ever had, and really there wasn't any pain...just slight soreness if I opened my mouth too much for the week after the operation. It took my mouth 3 or 4 weeks to get 100% back to normal to the point where I eat things that are really tough or pointy.

Good luck :)

I had mine cut out about 4 years ago... yes it hurts very badly! Take the pain meds and take them often though and you'll be good to go. I had a GREAT GREAT GREAT doctor though... I had very little swelling or bruising and would say I was pretty much totally healed within a month and a half or so- although your teeth move around a bunch so your mouth does stay a little soar... let's just say I didn't eat steak for about 6 months. I would really strongly recommend researching the oral surgeon you're using in depth... I didn't, I just got lucky. A friend of mine had hers taken out about a year ago, she was out of commision for like 4 months. Her face swelled like 3 times the size it should have been and stayed that way for months, and the doctor gave her a bunch of crap about asking for pain medicines. I didn't really feel like eating right away, I was scared to at first. I ate lots of pudding and apple sauce and soft things like people with braces would eat.
