If you're using dark colored pans (Teflon) you'll see on you box mix, if you're using mix, there is a temp and time change for those two items. Bake in the middle rack position. As to adding anything to a mix, DON'T, you're working with a formula and any adjustments have to be in balance or the whole thing is kapoot. Trust the instructions and good luck on your first.

Don't change or alter the recipe. Store bought cake batters are actually very good, they contain ingredients that most people cannot purchase in local stores. Adding milk will only create other problems.
Your problem is actually quite normal. Peoples ovens cook at different temperatures and that is why the mix will give you a range of cook times. Try baking the cake at the shortest of the time range given on the box, if that is still too much cut another minute or so off of the cook time. This will solve your problem.

Sure, you can add a little bit of milk, but just a teensy little bit, so it doesn't get all weird and soggy. It won't get burned if you put the oven timer on for about 2 minutes less than the recipe suggests. Like if the recipe says to bake it for 27 minutes, do it for 25, and then when the timer goes off, check and see if it's done by sticking a toothpick in the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, it's done. If it comes out covered in cake batter, you need to bake it for a couple more minutes. Also, if you plan on frosting the cake, make sure it's completely cooled before frosting it, or it will crumble.

Check the baking time carefully. Set a timer if necessary. Also make sure the oven temperature is what it is supposed to be. They are often hotter than the temperature you set them at. You can get a special thermometer to put inside the oven.

I don't believe in the tooth pick theory. Tap the cake with your finger. When the cake spings back and does not make a mark its done, if it leaves a finger mark its not done. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

Yes! But don't add too much. It will become gross and soggy.
