Honestly I'm not sure you can. I have a 98 Windstar, and the check engine light has been on for the past several years. I'll take it to the shop, they'll check what's wrong with it, nothing will be wrong, or they'll just reset the light, and it'll come back on within 3 days at the latest. Even after a complete tune-up, and resetting the light, it automatically comes back on. But maybe that's just my van. Try taking it to a dealer or something and see what they say about it.

You take you truck to a certified auto technician and have the computer control system checked out, the yellow or orange engine lamp should never say on, except for the 5 second bulb check when 1st started. The reason it is on is to let you know that there is a problem in the computer control system . Most people think these lights are like years ago when they would come on and you would reset them at a certain mileage, in fact, they are a warning lamp to have you vehicle serviced. Various sensors can cause the light to come on, and just "clearing" the code without fixing the problem will cause the light to reoccur. The reason you have it reset and it comes back on in a few days is that all sensors have whats called a "drive cycle", a drive cycle is the critera that the PCM will test your system while driving, it has to see a failure under 3 drive cycles for the light to come back on, once it comes on, it will stay on until it see's 3 "good trip" cycles or until you actually repair the failed part. Pay for an acurate diagnosis and have it fixed the 1st time, dont rely on Autozones "guess" just on the code itself. Good luck

The only thing you have to do is disconnect the battery for 20 minutes! That will reset the light. However, if the light comes back on you will need to take it to your mechanic because at that point there is something wrong with it. In most cases, the reason the light came on was probably you left it running while getting gas or didn't tighten the gas cap all the way!

I hope this works!

You need a special OBDII tool to do this, it is expensive and the light may come back on if there is a sensor malfunction with your car. The easiest way should be to bring it to the closest Autozone parts store and they may look up the malfunction codes and reset the lite for free. remeber that your car may need repairs in order to correct this problem.
Happy motoring.

buy an OBDII reader, read the codes and reset it.
DON'T REFUEL YOUR CAR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING OR LEAVE THE GAS CAP OFF ON THESE AS THAT WILL TRIGGER THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT"
OR take it to a mechanic and give him $50 - $200 to reset the light.
