been an eBay seller for 6 years and never had a problem with eBay or PayPal. what challenge? eBay is a business like any other business and you have the choice of using it or not using it. i have found that it's not eBay's ethics that need to be challenged but the ethics of some of the people who USE eBay.

I hate e-Bay/Pay-Pal. Can't trust when they take money from my credit card without my authorization only to verify if it is valid. They tell you that they will make a small deposit to your card, but once it is confirmed, they come and charge you behind your back. Happened twice and don't trust them anymore.
There are ways to verify if a credit card is valid without running a transaction without authorization, or without having to put in pennies to a credit card.
