Surely then any fantasy books should be banned since they are telling people things that aren't true, often making up new creatures and telling of elves and gnomes and suchlike, talk about powers of evil...

And how can Christians assume that this storybook contains 'real witchcraft'? I'm sure many witches, pagans and wiccans would be a little insulted since J.K.Rowling made up all the spells in the book... Though obviously Wingardium Leviosa is a touch of genius... I mean, look in a Latin book, folks! It's all just Latin words and symbolism. Hence why Sirius is called Sirius (the Dogstar) and Lupin (wolf) is Lupin. And many other examples. She's not actually casting any spell, she's creating a quite realistic and complex book.

I think, actually, people maybe just don't have the humour to deal with it! I find it so unconvincing as a concept that it could never insult me. But when I read it, it is 'real' which is the beauty of books in general!

No, of course its not evil. Just because there is magic in it, doesn't mean that it's considered evil and occult. To ban it would be robbing kids of their imaginations.
And regarding the mythological creatures, there were just as many creatures in the Chronicles of Narnia, but you don't see anybody trying to ban that movie, do you? No, because the kids in it were "sons of Adam and daughters of Eve".

Let me say this once, clearly, and hope people actually get it:
Harry Pottter has about as much to do with the actual practice of witchcraft as the Tooth Fairy has to do with the practice of dentistry.
At no point in time does HP address the central theory of witchcraft as it is generally practiced: that everything in the universe is interconnected in a vast "machine" of energy, and that by using sympathetic magic (various series of correspondances), one can apply force/intent at one point in the universe to create change somewhere else. No; instead HP raps off its "spells" in bastardized Latin and never addresses the question of Deity or religious worship, which are central issues for many witches.
Hope that clears things up a bit.

Harry Potter is only as evil as the people who read it. For instance, a long time ago Huckleberry Finn was put on the banned books list only to be removed from that list later after the Spirit of the Times had changed.

Harry Potter is pretty awesome! I think people should realize that Harry Potter doesn't really exist in real life. I mean, that's like saying you shouldn't watch Spongebob because sponges and seastars don't talk in real life. It's merely a form of entertainment.
Anyway, Harry Potter teaches that love can conquer evil. Relating to Christianity, love for God can conquer Satan's evil, if you want to put it that way.
God bless.

The heart of man is not compound of lies
But draws some wisdom from the only Wise.
Although now long estranged,
Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed.
Disgraced he may be, yet is not dethroned,
And keeps the rags of lordship once he owned.
Man, sub-Creator, the refracted Light,
Through whom is splintered from a single White,
To many hues, and endlessly combined,
In living shapes that move from mind to mind.
Though all the crannies of the world we filled
With elves and goblins, though we dared to build
Gods and their houses out of dark and light,
And sowed the seed of dragons- twas our right-
Used or misused. That right has not decayed.
We make still by the Law in which we're made.

The Bible says abstain from all appearance of evil. God has many warnings in the Bible about staying away from Mediums, and wizards, witchcraft. Read Deuteronomy 18-9-14, Exodus 22:18. They are a part of worshiping false gods. They are of Satan. There are 3 things you need to look at besides the Bible. The book 14 things witches don't want Christian Parents to know. He Came To Set The Captives Free, and there is a movie about Harry Potter from the Christian perspective. On there J. K. Rolling tells that they are true spells, and that she is into Wicca. So yes it is evil. Satan wants us to look on evil. He is the father of evil. Satan is the one that wants people to sacrifice animals, children, and anything else unto false gods. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

It is a set of stories about the inherent good and evil of all humans. It is written in a style that is accessible to children, and is well laid out to teach the differnces between right and wrong, and to treat others as you yourself would like to be treated, and foster a love of reading in young children. How is that evil?

Harry Potter is a fictional character in a series of books written by JK Rowling. Jesus christ is a fictional character in a series of books written by some long dead men.
Both series talk about magic/miracles. Both series talk about character. How some can label one evil and the other holy is beyond me.

I don't know why people would think it's evil. It's called FICTION, people. It's a classic story of good and evil. If anything, I would thik it teaches good morals. The bad guys get what's coming to them and the good guys win.
