This poor starving tomcat came to our backdoor. He was starving and in very bad condition. We fed him and took him to the vet to be checked and neutered. He was the friendliest cat I had ever seen. Now he is getting plenty of proper food and shelter but he is no longer that affectionate cat.

Neutering animals doesn't change there personality. They are not so driven by there hormones which can alter a cats behaviour but not there personality. Male cats are usually more affectionate than there female friends anyway. He will not feel the need to wander so much and will probably become a real sweety again once things have settled down.
Trust me he will come around. I think cats hold grudges as well but once he knows where his bread and butter is coming from he will be in for lotsa cuddles again soon.

Well done for doing such a noble thing, i pray you have many wonderful years with your new friend

I don't think neutering makes a cat less affectionate. If anything, males tend to become more easy-going after neutering. Just keep in mind that a lot of starving (for food and attention) cats can be extremely affectionate, then hold back a bit once they realize they're being well taken care of. I've experienced this with females a lot in the past.

Neutering him will change his personality 100 %, but it will be for the better. If he has a nasty personality then he'll probably still lean that way. Remember some old habits are hard to break.

I'm not sure about all cats, but it seemed like our male cat got calmer and less aggressive when we had him fixed as an adult. The female was less likely to run away.

Yes, unfortunately it does. You took his "manhood" away. Don't worry, though, with a lot of love and care, he will forgive you and be thankful you did it in the long run!!! :)

He's probably ticked off. If he doesn't change within a couple of months, you have options.
