I have never eaten fish before, I mean I have tried it, but I always hate it and usually it makes me sick. I am allergic to shellfish and as a child I didn't really understand the difference, so I was scared to eat any of it. As a result, I never aquired a taste for it. However, it is very popular now so you can get it anywhere. It is also healthy and I am trying to lose weight. What would you recommend as a beginner for a fish? I hate the smell of salmon and I hate tuna. Any other ideas?

Hi there... as a HUGE fish connesseur and avid cook, you want to start with a very mild, flaky white fish. Something like a Tilipia, Halibut or Orange Roughy. Happy eating!!

Flounder, Cod, Tilapia & Red Snapper are all extremely mild tasting fish. They have very white meat and are very flaky, which is something you want to look for when buying fish. If the filets have a red line then they will be considerably stronger.
Try fried fish to start before you go with the baked, blackened or broiled. The breading will also help to cut back on the fishiness.
Good Luck!!

Fish that are white (before cooking) are usually milder. If you smell the fish at the fish counter - go to another store. When you find what you like and you still think you "smell" fishyness...you can soak the fish in milk for about 15 min. or so and you'll have no fishy smell and no strong flavor.

Halibut, Mahi Mahi, Grouper.....basically any dry, flaky, white fish. Stay away from dark meat fish i.e. tuna, salmon, spanish mackarel. These have a lot of oil in them which give the "fishy" taste. But for the absolutely best fish you'll ever have, go with Orange Roughy. Its amazing!

Try fish n chips with malt vinegar to start off with. FnC are usually Cod, but some places use Haddock or Pollock. Stay away from Orange Roughy. It is endangered, has very little healthy Omega 3's and is high in mercury.

Flounder is really good and has a mild flavor. Catfish has a mild flavor too, just make sure all the skin is off of it (that silver stuff). Skin and the flesh just under it is what gives fish the "fishy" taste.

When I used to eat meat and all that, I LOVED Catfish. It doesn't taste anything like fish at all, especially the smell. It's really good and still good for you. You should try it.
