Try learning the basics of music before jumping in to learning to play the actual instrument. Get a private lesson teacher and learn key things like time signature, how many beats a quarter note, half note, whole note gets. Learn the note names. When you get all that down, start learning the fingerings of the saxaphone. Don't play on your sax unless you know how to make the right face (embouchere) for your horn. If you do, it starts a bad habit, and you don't want that happening.
Good luck! Tell me how it goes.

Don't try to teach yourself from a book. A good teacher will be able to teach you how to read music and the sax at the same time. Beginning band method books are written that way. That way your learning how to read the music on your instrument! If you want to get a head start before your school band program get a private music teacher. Just don't do it on your own as I've found if you learn it the wrong way it's much harder to change it down the line.

I would buy a basic theory book. This will take you through what the symbols are in music, the staff, notes, and the different types of scales. Most teachers are also used to teaching students that don't know anything about music. So, they can help you through any questions you have.

I gave saxophone lessons over the summer, and here's what Ihave come to learn. Try the music book Standard Book Of Excellence, the red book, level one. This teaches you how to read and play the music. My student switched from flute to saxophone, and he picked it up in about a week or two. GOOD LUCK! email me if you'd like!

Get Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharram -- it's an excellent book for independent study in basic music theory. I use it myself, but I use the more advanced copies of it. It's really amazing how simple Ms. Wharram makes theory seem. You'll get through the book in no time at all.
