Hypersomnia is not a disease in itself, it is a symptom that usually indicates another problem.

10-12 hours of sleep every night is considered hypersomnia. If you only sleep this much occaisionally (when stressed, sick, or just feeling lazy), I wouldn't worry as much about it.

I would not think that needing this amount of sleep would be genetic, but needing a little more sleep on average than other people can be. We all have different sleep needs.

A cure would depends on the problem. As I mentioned above, hypersomnia can be indicative of a larger problem. Common causes include depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, anemia, or any kind of underlying illness.

If you are sleeping this much on a regular basis, I would get thee to a doctor, pronto. And yes, I am qualified to say that. Tell the doctor everything that might be affecting your life right now so he can make an informed decision about what the problem might be.

Good luck.
