Global Warming is a big issue to me, but what is it to you?

Global Warming should not be a big issue. It is only an issue at all because of the billions of dollars at stake. The destructive view of global warming is blown way out of proportion. It is nothing more than a scare tactic to get money from big companies and governments. I do believe global warming is happening, but it is a natural thing. It has more to do with the sun's activities than man. The leading "experts" were so sure that we were heading into an ice age in the 1970's. This is nothing more than alarmist BS designed to fuel a new industry. It is elitist BS. Look at all the private planes Al Gore has taken all over the world to present his drivel. He could have done the same thing via a web conference and cost a lot less in emissions. They tell you to be green, but I do not see them being green. The only thing I see is them lining their own pockets. Furthermore, MT. St. Helens released more greenhouse gases in 1 eruption than all cars combined since they were invented. I see all these people griping about CO2. Let me let you in on a little secret, NASA has had the tech for DECADES to rid an atmosphere of CO2. Ever seen Apollo 13? Why not just build huge scrubbers if in fact this is the case? Don't get me wrong, I am all for reasonable protections for the enviroment, but this global warming thing is not only unreasonable, it has little basis in actual fact. Scientists disagree about the desructiveness that may or may not occur. Furthermore, the standards in the most recent study by the so called experts were eased so that they could say they thought with most certainty that man causes this.

There are many climatologists with opposing viewpoints on this issue. Do I think that man should control the pollution we are emitting in the air? Yes. Do I think Global Warming is inevitable and not man made? Yes.

Think about it. Climates change. Tides fluctuate. We used to be one big continent called Pangea. Now we are 7 continents. There was an Ice Age. We have the Grand Canyon due to Climates Changes. We have mountains due to climates changing. At one time the entire Earth was covered in ice and guess what? The Ice Melted. Little By Little. Just like it is Still Doing now.

As far as the water rising in Florida as one answerer stated: All along the coasts from Maine to Cape Cod to Myrtle Beach to Miami Beach you can see Sand Dunes 100 yards from the water line. Even the High Tide does not reach these dunes. Do you know why? Cause at one point in history... the water came up that far! Do you believe it? or were those Dunes Man Made too?

I think the only thing Man Made about Global Warming is the myth about it. The government just wants to control and brainwash you. Wake Up America!

Global warming is at the fore front because politicians found how to use a new platform to get re-elected. The world leadersuse it because they found ways to make money at it. This is a made up problem just like Global Cooling in the 1970's. Wake up people. I agree we need to be more efficient with our resources, and we should fine and jail companies who are dumping into our rivers maliciously. I want to stop the raiforest destruction, but to say that global warming is a serious man made issue and we need to destroy the American economy and bow down to the rest of the world certainly does not float my boat. Follow the money on this one and you will see that it is all for political gain and grant money for those scientists who profit off of the government if global warming stays at the front of the issues. Look deep into the Keoto (sp?) Treaty, first of all they took jets to a non-central resort location. Not very environmentally concious. THen in the parameters of the treaty they have a clause that makes it so you can buy or sell polution credits. This is all about shifting wealth and breaking down the United States. This is painfully obvious, just look at peoples agenda. The earth's mean temperature has risen .6 degrees C in the past 125 years. Greenland's icecaps have gotten colder in the past 10 years. The Scientists who do not gain anything on their posisition will tell you that the earth has a natural progression and this is what we are seeing. The UN report is made up of POLITICIANS not a good spread of scientists. THere are as many or more scientists who believe that man in NOT the reason and it is over hyped, but their voice is not heard in the LIberal Mainstream Media. This issue is 99% political, and an attempt to make the USA a socialist nation, and eventually communisim. WAKE UP AMERICA, IT IS TIME TO BE AMERICANS. FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE. STOP THE LIES

I agree.

I believe we take our lifestyle for granted and that if we don't do anything we lose it.

I used to believe that conserving is the only way to go. Not anymore. You can maintain the environment while maintainiing your lifestyle. Here they are:

1. If we know how CO2 works, we can plant more trees because they can inhale CO2 and we inhale O2. The "how" is tricky. I don't know how much space there is in the world and where we can get the seeds. Although, I've noticed we're building things that can make not do something else. For example, cell phones are so mainstream that, now, you hardly see a phone booth around. That space for a phone booth can be used for something else. How about the Internet? People can work at home without working in an office building, so that space can be used to plant more trees.
2. Since I brought up the cell phone and Internet, they do reduce pollution because you can do more by staying at home without having to travel as much.
3. Hybrid cars, and to a lesser extent, diesels have much better gas milage and lower emmissions than regular gas. Although for me, total electric cars should be the main GOAL to not emit CO2. Hybrid cars are closer to them but not yet there. Oh, I used to believe that an "econobox" is the way but not always. You can get 30 mpg in a Camry and that would be equal to a Toyota Yaris.
4. Home improvement helps reduce the reliance from the power station that uses gas to produce electricity. For example, replacing those one layered old windows with those new two layered, non-adjacent windows. They do serve not only for security but INSULATION. This means your heating/AC bill declines. Another example is the insulation of solar cells on roofs. So this means you don't have to get an very small house to fight against it. I've heard that Al Gore, Laurie David, and other "environmental elitists" have been labeled as "hypocrites." There need to be encourage to improve their mansions so they can get more support.

You know, I really do not think it is as big of an issue as some people, such as Al Gore, are making it out to be. No offense to Al, but what I'm saying is that there are bigger issues than that in the world that we need to solve first, such as the situation in Darfur, poverty around the world, etc. There are countless issues that people are putting on the backburners, so to speak. Did you know that in the past one hundred years, the average temperature has risen less than one degree? And the greenhouse effect is a plausible situation (take Venus, for example), but who's to say it's happening here on Earth? Humanity has only been on this Earth for several thousand years (most of which we haven't been tracking the temperature) so how could we know if we are causing these "greenhouse gases"? For all we know, the Earth could just be moving through a cycle in its temperature. For now, I say that global warming is not a threat to me, you, or all of society. Maybe it will be in the next million years, but there are other worldly problems that need to be taken into account.

Unfortunately it's real and is happening, They can't really tell how much longer we will be until we see some really scary stuff. If the ice keeps melting at the poles and water levels rise + a rise in water temps .. Finding/using cleaner fuels and living a simpler lifestyle will definitely slow things down.
I forget the EXACT details but the earth has gone through 5 global extinctions and if we use those as references the next one may be soon. It will eventually happen but WE can definitely slow it down.

Global warming is real...and completely natural. We've been in a state of global warming for the last 18,000 years....that's the facts. Within the next 2,000-5,000 years, we'll see global cooling into the next Ice Age. You, me, and the politicians playing on your fears will of course be long gone by then.

I completely agree. It's a huge issue and should be taken seriously. If anyone hasn't seen "an inconvenient truth", I highly recommend seeing it.
People who think it's a joke ARE the joke, because if they were even remotely informed they would know that ALL the scientific community agrees that it's an urgent problem that needs to be addressed NOW. The ones who think it's not serious are politicians who are in the pockets of large corporate polluters.

The next answerer (Mr. Thumbs-Down-To-Reality) needs to provide ONE legitimate scientific source who says the global warming is not an issue. this reminds me of when the Tobacco executives sat in front of the Senate and the American people and swore that they believed that cigarettes are not addictive and that they're not a direct cause of death and disease. Yeah, even then there were people who blindly accepted what they're told by people who made their living off of telling a lie. It's a sad fact that the truth will always be obstructed when a LOT of money is involved. Thank God, less and less of us are being fooled anymore. This is the information age and we're not going to take it lying down anymore.

Silly people...
The whole warming (current "issue") and cooling (1970's) is a normal cycle of the planet. All you need to do is take some basic ecology classes to find out why it's so normal. Planet warms up because of a thinning atmosphere, turns into more of a greenhouse, vegetation grows, cleans the air, temp drops back down. Animals "flex" their adaptations skills (e.i. survival of the fittest) and the best animals survive.
Results: Renewed planet with strong animals on the food chain to keep the whole cycle going.

Global warming is clearly not natural. Here's some hard facts. The first report is the authoritative document, full of data. It's a 21 page summary, the 1600 page full report will be out soon with voluminous data as proof.

Lots of data here. For example, changes in solar radiation are 0.12 watts per meter squared, while changes due to man are 1.6 watts per meter squared, more than ten times as much. So it's not the solar radiation increase that's causing it, it's us.

http://www.ipcc.ch/SPM2feb07.pdf

And this graph of CO2 is very enlightening.

http://scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/graphics_gallery/mauna_loa_record/mlo_record.html

The little teeth are the natural "carbon cycle". doing its' thing. CO2 goes down a bit in the summer and up a bit in the winter, consistent with plant activity. The large trend upward is us. We're digging up carbon the natural cycle buried over many many years, and burning it real fast.

Volcanoes are insignificant compared to the effects of man:

http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/climate_effects.html

Which is why most all scientists agree global warming is real and caused by us.

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686

"there is a scientific consensus on the reality of anthropogenic climate change. Climate scientists have repeatedly tried to make this clear. It is time for the rest of us to listen."

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/nation/16620307.htm

"the question of global warming was settled years ago for all but a few holdouts in the scientific community"

Unfortunately, we're kicking nature's butt on this one.

And it won't be just a little warming that we adapt to. It would be a major disaster.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money and lower the standard of living. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
